Prayer

A selection of verses showing what the Bible tells us about prayer.

The apostle Paul encourages all believers to pray:

1 Timothy 2 verse 8

8 I desire therefore that the men in every place pray, lifting up holy hands without anger and doubting.

He tells us that prayer will help us not to be anxious. He suggests prayers can be about anything and should include both requests and thanks:

Philippians 4 verse 6

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.

The Lord Jesus Christ assures us that if his words influence us our requests will be granted:

John 15 verse 7

7  If you remain in me, and my words remain in you, you will ask whatever you desire, and it will be done for you.

The apostle John assures us that God will grant any request that is according to His will:

1 John 5 verses 14 - 15

14 This is the boldness which we have towards him, that if we ask anything according to his will, he listens to us. 15 And if we know that he listens to us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions which we have asked of him.

The Lord Jesus Christ gives us an example of prayer:

Matthew 6 verses 9 - 13

9 Pray like this: ‘Our Father in heaven, may your name be kept holy. 10 Let your Kingdom come. Let your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. 11 Give us today our daily bread. 12 Forgive us our debts, as we also forgive our debtors. 13 Bring us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. For yours is the Kingdom, the power, and the glory forever. Amen.’
