In the prophecy on the Mount of Olives, Jesus refers to the abomination of desolation mentioned by the prophet Daniel. The relevant verses in Daniel's prophecy are:
31 “Forces will stand on his part, and they will profane the sanctuary, even the fortress, and will take away the continual burnt offering. Then they will set up the abomination that makes desolate.
11 “From the time that the continual burnt offering is taken away, and the abomination that makes desolate set up, there will be one thousand and two hundred and ninety days.
These verses make it clear that the abomination of desolation refers to a time when offerings made in connection with the worship of God in the temple will be replaced. Sacrifices stopped when the temple was destroyed in AD 70.
