- v 1 to 5 The Jewish council deliver Jesus to Pilate (the Roman governor) who is amazed that Jesus does not defend himself
- v 6 to 15 The crowd turn down Pilate's offer to release Jesus. Despite his own reservations, Pilate delivers Jesus to be crucified, in order to satisfy the crowd
- v 16 to 41 Jesus is crucified as predicted by the prophets. He dies on the cross. The reactions of some of the people who witness it are recorded
- v 42 to 47 Jesus is taken from the cross and put in a tomb by Joseph of Arimathaea, a member of the Jewish council. Some of the women watch where Jesus is buried
