Introduction
We should live lives which reflect our beliefs.
“Behold, I lay in Zion a chief cornerstone, chosen and precious:
He who believes in him will not be disappointed.”
“The stone which the builders rejected
has become the chief cornerstone,”
“a stumbling stone and a rock of offence.”
For they stumble at the word, being disobedient, to which also they were appointed.
Questions
1. What does Peter say that believers must do to grow?
v 1 and 2 Putting away therefore all wickedness, all deceit, hypocrisies, envies, and all evil speaking, as newborn babies, long for the pure milk of the Word, that with it you may grow,
2. How does Peter describe the chosen group of believers and what should they be doing?
v 9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, that you may proclaim the excellence of him who called you out of darkness into his marvellous light.
3. What example did Christ leave us that we should follow?
v 21 to 23 Christ also suffered for us, leaving you an example, that you should follow his steps, who didn’t sin, “neither was deceit found in his mouth.” When he was cursed, he didn’t curse back. When he suffered, he didn’t threaten, but committed himself to him who judges righteously.
Summary Points
- v 1 to 10 We should put away all bad thoughts and absorb the Word. Jesus is the supreme stone but is rejected by unbelievers. We should aim to be holy, fit to be stones in God’s spiritual temple with Jesus
- v 11 to 17 We should obey the authorities and fear God
- v 18 to 25 We should serve employers well whether they are good or bad. Christ suffered for us and we should follow his example
