Pride

A selection of verses showing that the Bible regards pride as a bad trait.

Proverbs 13 verse 10

10 Pride only breeds quarrels,
but wisdom is with people who take advice.

Proverbs 16 verse 5

5 Everyone who is proud in heart is an abomination to the LORD:
they shall certainly not be unpunished.

Proverbs 16 verses 18 - 19

18 Pride goes before destruction,
and an arrogant spirit before a fall.
19 It is better to be of a lowly spirit with the poor,
than to divide the plunder with the proud.

Malachi 4 verse 1

1 “For, behold, the day comes, it burns as a furnace; and all the proud, and all who work wickedness, will be stubble; and the day that comes will burn them up,” says the LORD of Armies, “that it shall leave them neither root nor branch.

Jesus makes it clear that pride, along with other bad traits, comes from ourselves:

Mark 7 verses 20 - 23

20 He said, “That which proceeds out of the man, that defiles the man. 21 For from within, out of the hearts of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, sexual sins, murders, thefts, 22 covetings, wickedness, deceit, lustful desires, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, and foolishness. 23 All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.”

The apostle Peter warns that pride is a bad trait:

1 Peter 5 verses 5 - 6

5 Likewise, you younger ones, be subject to the elder. Yes, all of you clothe yourselves with humility, to subject yourselves to one another; for “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” 6 Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time,
