We have no hope without God

A selection of verses showing that without God in our lives we have no real hope.

The book of Ecclesiastes tells us that everything about us ends at death:

Ecclesiastes 9 verses 4 - 6

4 For to him who is joined with all the living there is hope; for a living dog is better than a dead lion. 5 For the living know that they will die, but the dead don’t know anything, neither do they have any more a reward; for their memory is forgotten. 6 Also their love, their hatred, and their envy has perished long ago; neither do they any longer have a portion forever in anything that is done under the sun.

Paul tells the Thessalonian believers that they have the hope of the resurrection from the dead:

1 Thessalonians 4 verses 13 - 16

13 But we don’t want you to be ignorant, brothers, concerning those who have fallen asleep, so that you don’t grieve like the rest, who have no hope. 14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep in Jesus. 15 For this we tell you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will in no way precede those who have fallen asleep. 16 For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with God’s trumpet. The dead in Christ will rise first,

Paul reminds Titus that God has given us the sure hope of eternal life:

Titus 1 verses 1 - 2

1 Paul, a servant of God, and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God’s chosen ones, and the knowledge of the truth which is according to godliness, 2 in hope of eternal life, which God, who can’t lie, promised before time began;

The apostle Peter thanks God for the hope we have because of the resurrection of Jesus Christ:

1 Peter 1 verse 3

3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to his great mercy caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,

He also says believers should always be ready to tell others about their hope:

1 Peter 3 verse 15

15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts. Always be ready to give an answer to everyone who asks you a reason concerning the hope that is in you, with humility and fear,
