A selection of verses showing some significant events in the life of Joshua.
Joshua was the leader of Israel under God, after the death of Moses. This was just before his people entered the the land of promise to be later known as Israel.
Joshua was first mentioned when he was leading the Israelites in battle:
9 Moses said to Joshua, “Choose men for us, and go out, fight with Amalek. Tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill with God’s rod in my hand.” 10 So Joshua did as Moses had told him, and fought with Amalek; and Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill.
He worked closely with Moses; he accompanied Moses in his dealings with God:
13 Moses rose up with Joshua, his servant, and Moses went up onto God’s Mountain.
When it was time for him to lead Israel he was told to have no fear as God would be with him:
21 I commanded Joshua at that time, saying, “Your eyes have seen all that the LORD your God has done to these two kings. So shall the LORD do to all the kingdoms where you go over. 22 You shall not fear them; for the LORD your God himself fights for you.”
He was encouraged to be courageous but also to study God’s law constantly:
8 This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it; for then you shall make your way prosperous, and then you shall have good success. 9 Haven’t I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”
Joshua is perhaps best remembered for his conquest of the mighty walled city of Jericho:
2 The LORD said to Joshua, “Behold, I have given Jericho into your hand, with its king and the mighty men of valour.
Joshua encouraged the people to serve God:
14 “Now therefore fear the LORD, and serve him in sincerity and in truth. Put away the gods which your fathers served beyond the River, in Egypt; and serve the LORD.
Joshua died after a long life of service to the LORD:
29 After these things, Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the LORD, died, being one hundred and ten years old.
