The significance of Jesus' name

A selection of verses showing that the phrase the “name of Jesus Christ” includes all that Jesus Christ stands for.

The apostle Peter says that sins can be forgiven by baptism into his “name”:

Acts 2 verse 38

³⁸ Peter said to them, “Repent, and be baptised, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

People receive healing through the “name of Jesus Christ”:

Acts 3 verses 6 - 7

⁶ But Peter said, “I have no silver or gold, but what I have, that I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, get up and walk!” ⁷ He took him by the right hand and raised him up. Immediately his feet and his ankle bones received strength.

Acts 4 verse 10

¹⁰ may it be known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, this man stands here before you whole in him.

The message that Philip teaches involves the things concerning the “name of Jesus Christ”:

Acts 8 verse 12

¹² But when they believed Philip preaching good news concerning God’s Kingdom and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptised, both men and women.

When describing how he persecuted believers before his conversion, Paul says he was at that time acting against the “name of Jesus”:

Acts 26 verse 9

⁹ “I myself most certainly thought that I ought to do many things contrary to the name of Jesus of Nazareth.

Paul says that believers call on the “name of Jesus Christ”:

1 Corinthians 1 verse 2

² to the assembly of God which is at Corinth—those who are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called saints, with all who call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ in every place, both theirs and ours:

Philippians 2 verses 9 - 11

⁹ Therefore God also highly exalted him, and gave to him the name which is above every name, ¹⁰ that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, those on earth, and those under the earth, ¹¹ and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
