A selection of verses showing that we need to hear God's word to develop our faith.
The apostle Pauls spells it out clearly to the believers in Rome:
17 So faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
He reminds Timothy that his faith is dependent on him knowing the Scriptures:
15 From infancy, you have known the holy Scriptures which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith, which is in Christ Jesus.
Peter makes the link between hearing the Good News and believing:
7 When there had been much discussion, Peter rose up and said to them, “Brothers, you know that a good while ago God made a choice amongst you that by my mouth the nations should hear the word of the Good News and believe.
Peter says that we are born again by the word of God:
23 having been born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, through the word of God, which lives and remains forever.
Paul tells the Thessalonians that their belief came as a result of the word of God working in them:
13 For this cause we also thank God without ceasing, that when you received from us the word of the message of God, you accepted it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which also works in you who believe.
