God is a loving God

A selection of verses showing how God extends his love to people.

When God shows his character to Moses his loving attributes are mentioned first:

Exodus 34 verses 5 - 6

5 The LORD descended in the cloud, and stood with him there, and proclaimed the LORD’s name. 6 The LORD passed by before him, and proclaimed, “The LORD! The LORD, a merciful and gracious God, slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness and truth,

God shows his love to his chosen people Israel:

Isaiah 63 verses 7 - 9

7 I will tell of the loving kindnesses of the LORD
and the praises of the LORD,
according to all that the LORD has given to us,
and the great goodness towards the house of Israel,
which he has given to them according to his mercies,
and according to the multitude of his loving kindnesses.
8 For he said, “Surely, they are my people,
children who will not deal falsely;”
so he became their Saviour.
9 In all their affliction he was afflicted,
and the angel of his presence saved them.
In his love and in his pity he redeemed them.
He bore them,
and carried them all the days of old.

God warns against worshipping other gods and shows love to those who obey him:

Exodus 20 verses 5 - 6

5 you shall not bow yourself down to them, nor serve them, for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and on the fourth generation of those who hate me, 6 and showing loving kindness to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.

God corrects those who love him:

Proverbs 3 verses 11 - 12

11 My son, don’t despise the LORD’s discipline,
neither be weary of his correction;
12 for whom the LORD loves, he corrects,
even as a father reproves the son in whom he delights.

God's great love is shown to us in his plan to give us the hope of a long-term future:

John 3 verse 16

16  For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life.

Ephesians 2 verses 4 - 8

4 But God, being rich in mercy, for his great love with which he loved us, 5 even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— 6 and raised us up with him, and made us to sit with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 7 that in the ages to come he might show the exceeding riches of his grace in kindness towards us in Christ Jesus; 8 for by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God,

Those who keep Christ's commands will be loved by God and Christ:

John 14 verse 21

21  One who has my commandments and keeps them, that person is one who loves me. One who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him, and will reveal myself to him.”
