Titles of Jesus - Son of God

A selection of verses showing that Jesus is called the Son of God.

God tells David, the second king of Israel, that he will have a special descendant who will also be Son of God:

1 Chronicles 17 verses 11 - 13

11 It will happen, when your days are fulfilled that you must go to be with your fathers, that I will set up your offspring after you, who will be of your sons; and I will establish his kingdom. 12 He will build me a house, and I will establish his throne forever. 13 I will be his father, and he will be my son. I will not take my loving kindness away from him, as I took it from him that was before you;

This promise is confirmed by the angel Gabriel who tells Mary that she will give birth to the Son of God:

Luke 1 verses 30 - 32

30 The angel said to her, “Don’t be afraid, Mary, for you have found favour with God. 31 Behold, you will conceive in your womb and give birth to a son, and shall name him ‘Jesus.’ 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David,

Gabriel explains to Mary that the conception of her child will be through the power of God and he will be the Son of God:

Luke 1 verse 35

35 The angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore also the holy one who is born from you will be called the Son of God.

Jesus himself claims to be the Son of God in discussions with the Jewish leaders:

John 10 verse 36

36  do you say of him whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world, ‘You blaspheme,’ because I said, ‘I am the Son of God?’ 

The apostle Paul summarises the important place that Jesus, as Son of God, has in God’s purpose:

Romans 1 verses 1 - 5

1 Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, set apart for the Good News of God, 2 which he promised before through his prophets in the holy Scriptures, 3 concerning his Son, who was born of the offspring of David according to the flesh, 4 who was declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the Spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord, 5 through whom we received grace and apostleship for obedience of faith amongst all the nations for his name’s sake;
