Special Holy Spirit powers

A selection of verses showing that God gave special powers to people for special purposes:

Bezaleel was given special talents to help him make the Tabernacle which was at the centre of Jewish worship:

Exodus 31 verses 1 - 3

1 The LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 2 “Behold, I have called by name Bezalel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah. 3 I have filled him with the Spirit of God, in wisdom, and in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all kinds of workmanship,

Moses was given help to rule the Israelites which was passed on to 70 more:

Numbers 11 verses 16 - 17

16 The LORD said to Moses, “Gather to me seventy men of the elders of Israel, whom you know to be the elders of the people and officers over them; and bring them to the Tent of Meeting, that they may stand there with you. 17 I will come down and talk with you there. I will take of the Spirit which is on you, and will put it on them; and they shall bear the burden of the people with you, that you don’t bear it yourself alone.

Jesus told his disciples to wait in Jerusalem till they received special powers:

Acts 1 verses 4 - 5

4 Being assembled together with them, he commanded them, “Don’t depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which you heard from me. 5 For John indeed baptised in water, but you will be baptised in the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”

The disciples were able to speak in foreign languages which would help them give the gospel message in different languages:

Acts 2 verse 4

4 They were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak with other languages, as the Spirit gave them the ability to speak.

Acts 2 verses 7 - 8

7 They were all amazed and marvelled, saying to one another, “Behold, aren’t all these who speak Galileans? 8 How do we hear, everyone in our own native language?

The miracles they did also helped people at Iconium realise that the message was special:

Acts 14 verse 3

3 Therefore they stayed there a long time, speaking boldly in the Lord, who testified to the word of his grace, granting signs and wonders to be done by their hands.

Mark tells us that the preaching they did was helped by the miracles they could do:

Mark 16 verse 20

20 They went out, and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word by the signs that followed. Amen.
